Oh! My! Goodness! Storm Wins Blue Ridge Cup

The Fall, 2026 soccer season began on a Saturday morning in the mountains near Charlottesville.

It was the Blue Ridge Cup Soccer tournament and Storm warmed up to face Virginia Rush Soccer Club. As the two teams prepared to take the field, the field marshal approached and pointed at the mountain directly west of the field. He said that if the dark cloud looming over that mountain became a thunderstorm with lightning, he would have no choice but to end the match. The final score would be recorded as the score at the time of cancellation. The game would not be resumed.

Storm 1, Rush 0

After absorbing several minutes of pressure from Rush during the opening minutes, the Storm defense finally decided to show the Rush that the Storm on the pitch was more worrisome than the storm in the sky. Centerback Kahrina lofted a clearing pass over the midfield and in front of Striker Zara. A Rush defender got to the ball first but under heavy pressure from Zara’s hard charging run, had little option but to turn and place a back pass to her keeper. Zara never hesitated. She continued her run placing immediate pressure on the keeper to force an errant kick directly to the feet of Storm winger Ava, who was well-positioned just outside the box. With total composure, Ava calmly slotted the VISTA Storm’s first goal of Fall 2026 into the corner. Storm 1, Rush 0 with about 12 minutes gone in the half.

The goal seemed to wake up the Storm players who began asserting more pressure all around the pitch. In defense, Hailey and Kahrina assumed new positions to join veterans Ellie and Meri in their first game together as a back line. The transition looked seamless as Hailey shut down her wing attacker and Kahrina was sweeping away several potential attacks in central areas. Ellie and Meri were as reliable as ever, stopping any Rush advances into the defensive third.

Then, with about seven minutes left in the half, a loud whistle sounded and the field marshal came walking across the field, arms waving and instructing players and observers to retire quickly to their vehicles ahead of the advancing thunderstorm.

Darkness quickly descended on the area and heavy rain followed. All grass fields were closed for the day. Storm families packed up and headed home to await news of the tournament’s weather adjustments.

It wasn’t until 9:30 PM that night that the team would learn it would have to make up the afternoon’s cancelled game at 8:00 AM the next day! Amazingly, Storm families rallied and had every player at the field well before 7:30 AM. The job ahead was simple, win or tie against the Shenandoah Valley United Girls Navy team and advance to the final on Sunday afternoon.

Storm 1, SV United 1

The two teams were evenly matched throughout a scoreless first half with Goalkeeper Bayleigh and the Storm defense tenaciously turning away every attack by a talented Shenandoah squad.

It wasn’t until nearly 10 minutes into the second half, that the Storm finally broke through. As the match wore on, midfielders Kylee, “B” and Kaitlyn were ball hawking throughout the center third of the pitch. Then, Kaitlyn picked off a poor pass by her Shenandoah counterpart, dribbled to her right near the midfield circle and lifted her head to see that defenders were playing a high line. She lofted a perfect through ball over and behind them allowing Storm speedsters Zara and BaileyRae to run onto the ball. A lone defender had to make a choice…she chose Zara. BaileyRae has a nose for the goal and that was just the space she needed to two-touch away from the keeper before slicing a perfect shot into the opposite corner and over the keeper’s outstretched arms. It was Storm 1, SV United 0.

But their fans know that this Storm team doesn’t normally take the easiest path. Some minutes later, confusion in the back led to a Shenandoah goal knotting the score at 1-1. It was a nerve-rattling finish during the final minutes. Storm Striker Brynn nearly scored the clincher powering alone through 3 defenders. Shenandoah was given three corner kick opportunities. It was hectic.

Several Storm players had been in this situation before only to lose in a heartbreaking fashion at the end. Many were playing without rest but with the finals within reach, they dug deep and gritted out the result that would ensure their place in the afternoon match. As they trudged to the sideline following the final whistle, they could barely muster a celebration but in their hearts they knew that sheer determination had prevailed on this day. It wasn’t always pretty but it was the result they needed.

Storm 1, Calvert 0

After that thrilling morning match, the afternoon final against Calvert (MD) Select was almost anti-climactic. The Storm dominated possession, outshot Calvert 13-4 and made an early goal stand up for the entire match to become Champions for the first time in their existence as a team.

The goal looked eerily similar to their previous goals in the tournament. Midfielder Kylee dribbled through the space that was given, rolled a beautiful pass in front of Zara who deftly laid off a ball to Kaitlyn behind the defense. Kaitlyn’s shot was a no-doubter. Although Zara didn’t score in this tournament she had a pivotal role in all three of the Storm goals.

SUMMARY

Entering the tournament the Storm’s realigned defense had not yet been tested. Safe to say they passed the test. Led by Ellie’s clever and consistent play in the center, Bayleigh’s quickness and sure hands in the goal and Meri’s shutdown determination on the wing, Hailey and Karhina adopted their new positions at fullback and center back as if they had been there all along. Hailey displayed speed she didn’t know she had to run down any danger and her well-placed passes launched several counter attacks. Karhina was a constant threat to carry balls into the attacking third and place intentional balls into midfielders to disrupt defensive alignments.

Beginning with Saturday morning’s abbreviated match, midfielders Kylee, Kaitlyn and “B” improved their connectivity with each passing minute, finding spaces to play into, holding possession, never subbing out and making the center of the pitch exclusively “Storm Country.” Some observers commented that the trio reminded them of the Storm’s version of “Triple Espresso.”

After battling against girls last season who were older and sometimes twice their size, the Storm’s front line players, Ava, Zara, Brynn, BaileyRae and Brooke showed that their speed and cunning will be a headache for opponents this season. Brooke is a welcome addition to the squad and her appearances over the weekend showed great determination and competitive instinct around the ball.

The Storm gained valuable experience during the Blue Ridge Cup and tasted ultimate success for the first time. They now turn their attention to NCSL play every weekend and the WAGS Cup in one month.
